Good Afternoon,
See the document below regarding Petaluma. Catherine has included some resources for Trauma Response. Lastly, I just came from our daily EOC meeting and learned that our insurance provider, SISC, is opening up our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to all of our students. More details to follow.

Greetings SRJC Petaluma Faculty Colleagues,
First and foremost, please know that your safety and well-being are of primary importance. We are all impacted by this fire disaster, some directly, some more indirectly. As we consider returning to work, please continue to keep your well-being at the center of your attention, and in so doing, we will be better able to support our students. Please contact me directly ASAP if you will be unable to return to teaching Petaluma classes starting Monday the 23rd. The District will support the hiring of substitutes.
Petaluma Administration has aligned with the District in our emergency operations and response planning. Our intention has been to avoid duplicating communication when possible, please know that we are here working to support our community in our "new normal".
Campus Open this Week #SRJCStrong
* Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 9-4pm
* Admissions & Records, Counseling, Financial Aid, Disability Resources, Student IDs/Student Affairs, Mahoney Library, Student Psychological Services, Physical Fitness Center showers for students staff and immediate family members, and a student support lounge with free tutoring as needed at Our House Intercultural Center (Jacobs PC 116)
* Please be aware that only select staff are being called in for these services.
* A number of Departments are meeting this week on the Petaluma Campus, if you return to Campus this week or need a room reserved, please let me know.
The Frequently Asked Questions guide sent out yesterday and attached here answers instructional questions that have arisen so far. However, as other questions come up, please reach out to your Department Chair and me for consultation. As you consider changes to your syllabi, please keep in mind that the students may need these changes communicated to them by as many means as possible: in class, via email, and via Canvas. Please also keep in mind that cognitive distortions are a normal reaction to trauma, including difficulty concentrating, time and space confusions, and impaired rational thinking. Creating a calm, grounded educational environment will be very helpful to our students. To learn more about Trauma-Informed Care and how to respond to students, please see this training provided by Sonoma County Office of Education yesterday<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14wKlOi6uhfQ-bQm6jyl4ZmNLUUzIt0QWxhME9rvG6dI/edit%23slide%3did.p&c=E,1,YuXLb7xWwJqaYmhCZvu8Sh8_d8MI7R9X769LxIH6TsHPHB4IlR7OcAmGC2mY9Rc8JEcLb9USdJPHIYpLtEyevjv2snNoYzDxpPpXLR1Dupw,&typo=1>-my thanks to Vanessa Luna Shannon for sharing this vital information.
Our students are impacted by the trauma: KC Greaney's OIR team came in over the weekend to develop a student survey at the request of Student Services, thus far, more than 10,000 students have responded. Preliminary results showed that:
* more than a third report being seriously impacted by the fires
* 450 report having lost their homes and over 2,700 were or continue to be evacuated
* more than 27 percent reported having medical/health/mental health issues (including trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety) as a result of the fires
* about 78 percent of students said they would be ready to return on October 23rd.
These results show our students are impacted and yet we know that all students have strengths and can be resilient.
How do we resume an educational environment when our instructors and students have experienced varying levels of traumatization? Wright and Wordsworth (2013, attached) examined what instructor responses were beneficial to students' coping following an earthquake in New Zealand. Four themes emerged for how instructors could support students' recovery:
1. Attending to students' emotional needs by
o Acknowledging that students' lives have been disrupted
o Understanding that students' coping strategies may be taxed
o Providing additional support and resources (for example, online resources)
2. Reducing students' level of uncertainty by
o Maintaining established routines when possible,
o Establishing certainty by addressing questions
o Providing structure
3. Addressing any instructional changes by being
o Adaptable
o Flexible, and
o Possessing a positive, supportive attitude
4. Communicating
o Timelines repeatedly and
o Frequently with students
Please let me know if you would like further training and discussion on how to respond to students after a natural disaster. Again, the SCOE training<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14wKlOi6uhfQ-bQm6jyl4ZmNLUUzIt0QWxhME9rvG6dI/edit%23slide%3did.g28b5765c3b_0_564&c=E,1,U6pzC8r8aIbLpm35GjUgCCw0o4AskCzhbZjoD7TsNt4_g0mlMBdccRth2AJdUCSAbFWsYuqKyRocQdH10QJMKdYb_jRakIj_q-07b5JepECgpZwWWm2hls4keA,,&typo=1> is very helpful in reminding us to practice our own self-care first and extending that kindness outward to our students.
Regarding Petaluma's air quality, we have turned off the HVAC system since the early morning last Monday to prevent the influx of smoke from the fires and maintain air quality to the extent possible. Facilities staff are replacing all of the air filters this week. Environmental Health and Safety are monitoring outside and inside air quality on both the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. Watch for messages from Doug Kuula regarding air quality. We have a large supply of N95 masks on campus and are distributing to anyone who requests one, please let me know if you need any. Again, your health is of primary importance, if you have any concerns about environmental conditions, please let me know.
As we continue to create our SRJC Petaluma response plan, please feel free to reply to this email with your suggestions and questions. In returning to work this week and last, I have seen our invisible networks materialize and felt our strength together. You have my deepest appreciation for how you are walking through this, caring for your loved ones and supporting our community.
Best,
C
