Water Treatment Plant Operator I/II
Plant Operator I $52,930- $64,337 ($25.45 - $30.93 hourly) Plant Operator II $58,343 - $70,916 $28.05 - $34.09 hourly
The City of St. Helena is located in the center of the premier Napa Valley wine-making region of California approximately 6o miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area. The City has a population of approximately 6,000 and is a full service city with its own Police Department, Public Library, Building Department, Water and Sewer Departments and Part-Time Fire Department.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
· The Plant Operator I/II is the entry level or journey level class responsible for a wide variety of plant operations and maintenance of the water treatment plant and related facilities, and incum-bents are expected to perform the full scope of assigned duties. The classification is alternatively staffed with Plant Operator III and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience, obtaining required certifications and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level class.
Examples of Duties: (include but are not limited to the following)
· Operates , monitors and maintains all plant equipment and components and related facilities, including but not limited to pumps, chemical feed systems, tanks, plumbing, pump stations, wells, and control systems; reads and interprets meters, gauges and charts; conducts well soundings; performs backwash operations; maintains and upgrades mechanical and electrical systems.
· Conducts regular on-site inspections of plant and system operations making appropriate adjustment to pro-cess controls ensuring that operational problems are identified and corrected; ensures that plants are oper-ating within safety standards established by federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations.
· Performs basic and skilled water quality laboratory testing and analysis; takes samples on a daily basis to en-sure proper plant operation and quality of water; adheres to quality assurance programs for laboratory analy-sis and instrumentation; prepares and updates reports, including records and logs in compliance with state and federal mandates for reporting.
· Performs maintenance and construction work as directed on the water treatment system and related facilities; maintains plant facilities and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition; loads and unloads equipment and materials.
Ability to:

· Safely and effectively operate the tools and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of water treat-ment facilities.
· Perform plant operation and maintenance assignments
· Reside within a thirty minute response time of the downtown City area within three months of employment.
· Interpret, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and regulations.
· Read, interpret and record data accurately.
· Organize, prioritize and follow-up on work assignments
· Work independently and as part of a team
· Make sound decisions within established guidelines
· Analyze a complex issue, and develop and implement an appropriate response
· Observe safety principles and work in a safe manne
· Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
One year experience working in construction, maintenance or related experience and one year of experience inthe operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant equivalent to that of a Plant Operator I with the City of St. Helena.
Requirements:
Must possess a valid class C California driver’s license.
Possession of the following certificates: Grade II Certificate as a Water Treatment Plant Operator from the Cali-fornia State Department of Health Services (DHS).
Note: Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the selection process
