Baywork has set up an Operator Internship rotating one year program for four paid positions from January 16th - Dec. 29th, 2023 and

BAYWORK OPERATOR IN TRAINING INTERNSHIP - 2023
Participating Bay Area Water/Wastewater Agencies: Contra Costa Water District, Delta Diablo Sanitation District, Diablo Water District,  Union Sanitary District
Location: Water/wastewater operations and other industrial settings in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.
Positions: Water Operator-In-Training and Wastewater Operator-In-Training
Number of Openings: Up to 4 positions
Dates:  Jan. 16th - Dec. 29th, 2023. Interns will work a minimum of 24 hours/week for up to 52 weeks; rotations of 4-6 months at 2-3 agencies. (Ex. 6 months at one agency followed by 6 months at a second agency, assuming successful completion of 1st rotation.)
Pay rate: Between $20-$26/hour depending on location

Internship Description:
Interns will receive training in the operation and maintenance of water/wastewater treatment facilities and equipment at a Bay Area water/wastewater agency. This internship is designed to assist students in obtaining hours mandated by the California State Water Resources Control Board. As an intern, you will:


  *   Learn to work safely, responsibly and follow safety regulations, safety policies and procedures.
  *   Job shadow and assist tradespeople in the operation of water/wastewater treatment plants to ensure efficient operation.
  *   Assist in reading meters and gauges to determine efficient equipment operation, records readings.
  *   Receive training in water quality testing, amounts of chemicals for safe usage, laboratory operations, the proper use of test equipment, and the methods and techniques used in maintaining facilities and equipment.
  *   Receive training in problem solving and methods for diagnosing and correcting malfunctions and resetting relays and control system components.
  *   Cleans tanks and other equipment; maintains facilities and grounds in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  *   Work with maintenance, engineering, and operations personnel to solve problems and determine needs.
  *   Update and maintain a variety of detailed records of work performed.
  *   Assist in the performance and support of activities in compliance with state regulations.
Internship Requirements:

  *   Completion of at least one semester of a Water Technology program or closely related field (a minimum of 6 units of college credits) at a Bay Area Community College, relevant apprenticeship, relevant military training, or private trades training program.
  *   Is currently eligible for Wastewater Operator-In-Training Certification - (min. 6 units of college credits)
  *   Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  *   Possession of the physical characteristics to learn and perform tasks including lifting and carrying tools and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs.
  *   Must be able to pass a background check including but not limited to fingerprinting.
  *   Possess a valid CA Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurance under the agency's vehicle insurance.
  *   Given the work is in industrial settings, the candidate must be willing to work outdoors and in inclement weather.

This program provides:

  *   Paid internship at Bay Area water and wastewater agencies
  *   On the job experience in water/wastewater operator trades
  *   Assistance with tuition, books, certification and testing fees, transportation, and safety equipment costs
  *   Post-internship job placement services & referrals to job openings with Bay Area agencies
  *   Referral to local apprenticeship and civil service testing opportunities
