Santa Rosa Water has an excellent paid internship opportunity for individuals interested in a future career in Wastewater Operations! Interns will gain valuable hands-on experience during their internship at the Laguna Wastewater Treatment Plant.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
EXAMPLES OF TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES (Illustrative Only)
Wastewater Treatment Plant Interns may be instructed in and receive supervised hands-on training on some of these duties:
How to operate treatment, pumping, and reclamation facilities to achieve proper processing of wastewater, biosolids and recycled water within mandated operation requirements
How to inspect plant operational equipment and facilities on a regularly-scheduled basis; record readings of pumps, chemical feed, and other treatment and pumping equipment How to review and analyze operational information and test results
The purpose of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system
How to collect wastewater, sludge, and other samples from various phases of the wastewater treatment process
How to operate valves, pumps, and automated controls to regulate the flow of wastewater through the system
Screenings and grit removal; cleaning of primary and secondary clarifiers, and other wastewater equipment and facilities
Gain an understanding of the principles of wastewater treatment process operation, including primary, secondary, tertiary treatment, and disinfection
Appropriate safety procedures, including those related to the safe handling of chlorine and other treatment chemicals
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
General Qualifications: To qualify for any Student Intern position, individuals must be enrolled
in a full-time or part-time academic or vocational program or curriculum which is directly related
to the work the Intern would be performing for the City. Student Interns are classified as
temporary employees and work variable hours per week on a schedule that accommodates his
or her academic coursework or schedule and the operational needs of the department. Interns
must have the ability to: complete basic arithmetic calculations; efficiently and accurately use
computer software programs; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and, if
required, have the ability to work outside periodically.
Knowledge of:
Arithmetic
Basic mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic principles
English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation Ability to:
Apply science and math concepts to real situations Function as part of a team
Be safety oriented
Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing Use tact, initiative, prudence, and good judgment within general policy guidelines Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the cou of the assignment
Certificate: A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator-In-Training certificate from the California State Water Resources Control Board must be obtained upon hire. Hours worked at the La Wastewater Treatment Plant under the Operator-In-Training certificate will be recorded with California State Water Resources Control Board and will count towards the 1,800 hours of qualifying experience required by the State to become a certified wastewater treatment plant operator.
License: For assignments that require travel to locations throughout the City, individuals m be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle safely and possess a valid, Class C California driver's license or be able to demonstrate the ability to travel on scheduled and unscheduled visits to various locations in the City which may or may not be reachable by public transportation.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Incumbents will perform work at the Laguna Wastewater Treatment Plant. Work requires observation of pumps and motor operation and other routine monitoring of equipment require climbing of steps and stairs, repeated bending and stooping, and observation of dials and di displays. Personal safety and chemical spill response requires that operators be able to hear sirens, gas detector alarms, and other auditory devices. Daily record-keeping entails writing concise and proper entries into a logbook.
Selection Process:
Applications will first be reviewed to ensure they are complete and demonstrate the applicant possession of minimum qualifications. Next, the applications and supplemental questionnaire will be reviewed/evaluated to determine the MOST QUALIFIED candidates. The most qualify candidates will be invited to the next steps, anticipated to include a department interview. Successful candidates will be required to pass a background investigation and depending on assignment, may also be required to pass a pre-employment physical examination.
