[Unowmath] Free Math course to raise your math skills this summer!

Dear Student:

You've been selected to participate in an exciting opportunity this summer to improve your Math skills through a partnership between Santa Rosa Junior College and Patten University (www.patten.edu<http://www.patten.edu>). Due to limited funding, only the first 25 students who sign up will be accepted into this special pilot program.

Cost:
All course fees and textbooks costs are free, thanks to funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. However, space is limited to the first 25 students who sign up.

What:
To improve your Math skills, you will be required to complete specially designed online modules focused on Mathematics and Academic Strategies. These modules have been designed to be engaging and fun. Please watch the movie trailers for these modules:

When:
The Math and Academic Strategies modules start June 24th and run for 8 weeks.  The majority of the coursework will be completed online and at your own pace. Additionally, students will meet on campus once a week for two hours to review course material with faculty and engage in fun learning activities.  Below are the meeting dates for the Math and Academic Strategies modules. To participate in this program, you must be able to attend all eight of these meetings:

Meeting 1 (Academic Strategies): Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd fl)
Meeting 2 (Math): Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd fl)
Meeting 3 (Academic Strategies): Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd fl)
Meeting 4 (Math): Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd fl)
Meeting 5 (Academic Strategies): Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd fl)
Meeting 6 (Math): Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd fl)
Meeting 7 (Academic Strategies): Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd fl)
Meeting 8 (Math): Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd fl)

Who:
These modules will be taught by Santa Rosa Junior College faculty.  In addition to the classroom sessions, the faculty will be available to answer any questions you have as you proceed through the online modules, and will actively reach out to you each week to check up if they can help you with progress.  Bios of the faculty are provided below:

The Math faculty is Dr. Ying Lin. Dr. Lin has been teaching at Santa Rosa Junior College since August, 2011. Prior to joining the Math department here, he taught full-time for 6 years at Pima Community College and University of Arizona, both in Tucson, Arizona. He has also taught summer school at Mendocino College in Ukiah for a few years. His degrees were from Beijing University (bachelor's) and UCLA (master's and doctor's).

The Academic Strategies faculty is Ms. Jerry Thao. Ms. Thao holds a M.S. in Counseling, with a specialization in Career and College, from San Francisco State University. She holds a B.A. in History from UC Davis and an A.A. in Social and Behavioral Sciences from San Joaquin Delta College.

Prior to coming to SRJC, Jerry served as the EOPS Counselor at Lassen Community College (10/11), the Career Advisor/ Program Coordinator at Sonoma State University (09/10), a Career Counselor at Stanford University (08/09), and a Career Counselor at University of San Francisco (07/08).  She also has experience working with refugees at Lao Khmu Association and with urban youth at the Mayors Youth Employment and Education Program.

As a Counselor, she assists students with a range of academic, career, personal, and social challenges.  This may include:  selecting appropriate courses to achieve student goals, help students explore, plan, and research career options, assist with academic performance and etc.  Her goal is to teach students the strategies needed for academic success to achieve their goal.

Additionally, you will be assigned a Student Advisor who will serve as a helpful coach to provide support throughout the courses.
