[Unowenglish] Free Reading and Writing courses to raise your English skills this summer!

Dear Student:

You've been selected to participate in an exciting opportunity this summer to improve your Reading and Writing skills through a partnership between Santa Rosa Junior College and Patten University (www.patten.edu<http://www.patten.edu>). Due to limited funding, only the first 25 students who sign up will be accepted into this special pilot program.

Cost:
All course fees and textbooks costs are free, thanks to funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. However, space is limited to the first 25 students who sign up.

What:
To improve your Reading and Writing skills, you will be required to complete specially designed online modules focused on Reading and Writing. These modules have been designed to be engaging and fun. Please watch the movie trailers for these modules:

When:
The Reading and Writing modules start June 24th and run for 8 weeks.  The majority of the coursework will be completed online and at your own pace. Additionally, students will meet on campus once a week for two hours to review course material with faculty and engage in fun learning activities.  Below are the meeting dates for the Reading and Writing modules. To participate in this program, you must be able to attend all eight of these meetings:

Meeting 1 (Reading): Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd floor)
Meeting 2 (Writing): Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd floor)
Meeting 3 (Reading): Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd floor)
Meeting 4 (Writing): Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd floor)
Meeting 5 (Reading): Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd floor)
Meeting 6 (Writing): Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd floor)
Meeting 7 (Reading): Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd floor)
Meeting 8 (Writing): Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at 12 noon in Doyle 4420 (3rd floor)

Who:
These modules will be taught by Santa Rosa Junior College faculty.  In addition to the classroom sessions, the faculty will be available to answer any questions you have as you proceed through the online modules, and will actively reach out to you each week to check up if they can help you with progress.  Bios of the faculty are provided below:

The Reading faculty is Ms. Jessica Campbell.
Jessica says: "I have been teaching in the ESL Department at SRJC since August 2012. Before moving to Sonoma County, I taught ESL reading and writing courses at San Diego State University and at International House, a private English language institute in San Diego. Prior to this, I also taught English abroad to K-12 students in South Korea and volunteered as an English tutor with the International Refugee Committee. I have a B.A. in International Relations from UC Davis and an M.A. from San Diego State University in Applied Linguistics.

The Writing faculty is Ms. Angela Romagnoli.

Angela says: "I teach a rad variety of Writing, Critical Thinking, and Literature courses at Santa Rosa Junior College. I recently moved to West Sonoma County from Southern California where I was teaching at Cal State San Bernardino, Riverside Community College, and Mt. San Jacinto Community College. My academic interests include Rhetoric, Technology and Writing, and Queer Theory. Before I found my love in the Writing Classroom, I played semi-professional basketball and coached women's basketball for the University of Redlands. I have MA degrees in Rhetoric/Composition, Literature, and Higher Education with an emphasis in Leadership and Change. Some of my favorite subjects in Literature and in the classroom include Popular Culture, Race, Gender, Sexuality, Religion, and Technology.
