Job Description:
BioMarin develops and commercializes innovative products for serious rare diseases and medical conditions. The Market Access and Patient Services group supports this corporate vision through operations that: Monitor and influence the reimbursement environment Secure broad payer coverage
Address financial barriers to therapy
Manage individual patient cases
Design/implement adherence strategies
The Appeals Specialist will work in the United States and Puerto Rico to support BioMarin's RareConnections team and functional partners with the following tasks:
* Case-level Appeals Activities- Research individual payer appeal processes, co-develop appeal strategy and create tactical action plan and adhere to timeline, secure alignment with key commercial stakeholders, facilitate the development of communications (draft appeal letters and/or provide MD evidence) by leveraging clinical evidence from Medical Affairs or Payer policy evidence, procedures and appeal process.
* RareConnections Interface--Monitor the incoming cases to identify and hopefully pre-empt downstream denials.
* MAPS Interface--Identify trends on payer denials, escalate to appropriate team members, e.g., (RareConnections, Managed Markets, Medical Affairs , Sales and Marketing as appropriate) Demonstrated operational, organizational, problem solving, communications, and project management skills are required. Strong results orientation and a sense of urgency to get things done are critical. The Specialist possesses ability to consider multiple facets of health care services delivery and systems in the United States. This professional is disciplined in an entrepreneurial and growing commercial organization. This individual must be creative, flexible and adaptable to new and changing situations, be goal-oriented, and work collaboratively with case management team as well as functional partners.
Develop and implement strategies and tactical programs addressing patient-level barriers to product access (e.g. coverage and reimbursement, Patient Assistance Program parameters ) Work closely with case management hub and call-center operations (BioMarin RareConnections) to develop and execute plans addressing patient-level barriers to product access Integrate seamlessly with BioMarin RareConnections operations, Managed Markets, Payer Policy and Field Account Teams Collaborate closely with other commercial groups including Marketing, Medical Affairs/Information and Compliance Participate as necessary on brand, field sales, and other commercial teams Manage and adhere to corporate policies and practices
Ability to travel between Corporate offices in San Rafael and patient hub (currently in San Bruno, CA) on a regular basis.
Skills:
3+ years experience of relevant pharmacy benefit and medical benefit healthcare reimbursement experience
Previous experience in healthcare in positions encompassing insurance, case management, interactions with health professionals, patients and family members Related experience in specialty drug health care operations, billing, public/private health/pharmacy reimbursement and customer service, infusion services
Full understanding of the insurance approval/denial/appeal process; previous direct experience in submitting appeals and advocating for appropriate clinical treatment of patients is highly desired
Experience with and full knowledge of insurance, workers compensation and managed care systems
Good analytical and organizational skills, the ability to interact and positively influence across multiple departments
Education:
Degree from an accredited college/university or equivalent experience
