The 19th annual Dr. John W. Rice Award ceremony this month recognized two California community college programs for their outstanding efforts to improve student equity, diversity and student success on campus.



Named after former California Community Colleges Board of Governors member Dr. John W. Rice, the awards honored Santa Barbara City College’s Leaders in Equity, Antiracism and Reparations Now (LEARN) program for Diversity and Equity, and Bakersfield College’s Completion Coaching Communities program for Student Success.

West Los Angeles College Receives Federal Grant to Boost Apprenticeships

WLAS was awarded a $12 million grant – the single largest grant in the college’s history – from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop and oversee apprenticeship programs across the country for as many as 5,000 students. The program is expected to provide several different student-focused “career on-ramps” for jobs, education, internships and apprenticeship opportunities. It is set to begin in fall 2019.

Most importantly, however, the new site is designed for students, prospective students and their influencers, who our research shows make up 65 percent of the more than 1.5 million unique annual visitors to the site. The Chancellor’s Office wants to give these students an easier way to find a college or program, apply and pay for college.
