Across California, Guided Pathways Work Plans Make the Grade

The RP Group was tasked with analyzing each California community college’s Guided Pathways work plan, which asked colleges to identify their current GP efforts and outline their inquiry, design and implementation plans for the 18-month, “Phase I” funding period between spring 2018 – summer 2019. The purpose of this analysis was to gain insight into how each college intended to advance GP reform, while also identifying what kinds of support colleges say they needed in order to be successful.

In partnership with the RP Group's Leading for the Middle team, Merced College produced a video that reinforced the value of the Guided Pathways framework in supporting student success. This video was shown at their Convocation. The message echoes the importance of campus involvement and invites further participation from the audience in identifying a different term for "meta majors".

On a basic level, meta majors empower students to make more informed choices during their educational journeys. Why is this important? Because research suggests more informed educational choices lead to more successful community college students. Across the state, colleges have begun reaching out to their own faculty, staff and students for input on how to best implement meta majors on their own campuses.

During the frenzy of getting the colleges ready for students, I hope thoughts about Guided Pathways are also near—thoughts about how the start of the semester might change under a Guided Pathways framework, perhaps? Or perhaps questions about what to expect from the design and implementation process that most of us will be engaging this year.
