The Doing What MATTERS for Jobs and the Economy framework recognizes the importance of STEM/STEAM to ignite the economy and is therefore seeking ways for community colleges to better connect into the Maker movement to foster critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communications -- key, in-demand skills by California's employers. The INNOVATIONMAKER Investment 3 effort seeks to identify and network together 10+ colleges, including one lead for the community-of-practice, committed to exploring, setting up, and/or building out their connections to the Maker movement. Community colleges can use the establishment of a Makerspace as a means to position themselves as a key stakeholder in their region's innovation economy. ICT Training for the 21st Century

Twenty Bay Area Community College Consortium (BACCC) colleges joined forces to establish a remotely shared ICT Lab Facility (NETLAB+) to serve their ICT students who need hands-on skills demanded by ICT employers. This shared facility was funded by the 40% CTE Enhancement funds. Gerlinde Brady of BACCC reports that in addition to saving on costs, benefits of the regional approach include collaborative curriculum development, coordination of industry academy programs, development and coordination of K-12 pathways, faculty professional development opportunities, and joint marketing and public relations efforts. Advanced Manufacturing Deputy Sector Navigator Gurminder Sangha serves the Central Valley / Mother Lode region and has been an integral component of the event.
