Subject: PALS in CTE

I received a message from Lauren Servais and Kris Abrahamson asking me to reach out to your program coordinators and CTE faculty about additional participation in the PALS program. We have had great success in Machine Tool and Auto with this program. Please forward this message to all your CTE faculty and have them get in touch with Lauren if they are interested.

Peer Assisted Learning Specialists (PALS) can serve three main functions:
* Attend regular class meetings to offer embedded classroom assistance help to students and/or to understand the instructor's teaching approach and strategies. At least two hours per week in class is required of all PALS. When determined by instructor, PALS will attend more than two hours weekly.
* Provide grading assistance to instructor
* Hold individual tutoring sessions outside of regular class, as needed. Depending on student demand, these could be small group tutoring sessions.

PALS will earn $12.10 an hour as an STNC Instructional Aide III and be compensated for training. In addition, PALS must be 18 or older.

Based on the Spring pilot, we found it most successful when instructors identified their own Peer Assisted Learning Specialist(s), who can be former students and/or adult members of the community with the disciplinary knowledge to assist students/instructor and offer grading assistance. We're asking instructors to identify their own PAL Specialist; however, if you don't have a student in mind, please contact Lauren Servais about possibly working with a PAL Specialist who is currently participating in the program.
Instructors participating in this pilot have the flexibility in how they choose to utilize the available hours of their PALS. Instructors will be expected to:
* Confer regularly with the Peer Assisted Learning Specialist to provide direction for student contact and grading
* Allow the PAL Specialist to attend at least one hour a week of the regular class meeting to offer embedded tutoring help to students
* Attend an orientation session with their selected PAL Specialist (flex available) to learn how to utilize the PALS (see dates below.)
* Provide PALS with regular feedback to direct and improve their work
